The West Seattle Association of PeeWee Baseball (WSAPWB) was formed in the mid-1970's to provide a competitive youth baseball organization for the West Seattle Area. As part of the PONY organization, our goal is to teach fundamentals of baseball, instill the values of good sportsmanship and fair play, and build a sense of community amongst all those that participate in the League.
Tales about the beginning of the League are vague and vary depending on who's telling the story. The commonly accepted version tells that a small group of parents wanted an alternative to Little League and recreation league youth baseball organizations that then existed in the West Seattle area. This intrepid group gathered the resources to pull together a League affiliated with PONY Baseball then set about finding it a home. They negotiated a lease with the City of Seattle for the parcel of land that our fields occupy that lets us use the land at no cost, but with the condition that the City would provide no assistance in the development and maintenance of the property. With the help of some local businesses and donations of equipment and material, the group cleared an area to install at least two baseball diamonds (what are now the South A and B fields). Several years later, as the League grew, the North fields were added to the complex.
It's doubtful that the small group that formed this league over thirty years ago ever envisioned what would become of what they began. We now have players who are the children of former WSAPWB players a testament to the foundation upon which the league is built. We're proud to have over five hundred players and over thirty teams in three divisions make up our League.
Our operating budget comes from team sponsorships, registration fees, Snack Shack sales and tournament fees. As a not-for-profit organization, every penny that comes into the League is re-invested into operation expenses.
All of WSAPWB is run by volunteers - from the Executive Board all the way to those who mow fields and run the Snack Shack. As such, we rely on the willingness of people associated with the League to step up and take on the commitment of participating in helping make this League run. If you're willing to take on such a commitment, please contact a member of the Executive Board. And we're always looking for ways to improve our organization, so if you have suggestions, we'd like to hear those too.
